As a result of the fact that the principles accurately describe the ways that the De Beukelaar Groep operates (even better than our team could describe), the principles were received by team members with some mixed feelings. Adopting the principles was our first lesson in what happens within organizations when Corporate Effectuation is introduced.
Some of our team members embraced the theory and principles that were discovered by Saras Sarasvathy and immediately supported Thomas. Some members of the team, on the other hand, passionately renamed the principles “eFUCKtuation”. This initial reaction killed the charm and demystified the inner workings of what had intensely connected the partners of Beukelaar Groep for years.
After a few successful client sessions in which the organizational work structure of De Beukelaar Groep was explained to team members, and of course authoring two of his own books on the subject, the team began to embrace the principles that were introduced to the organization by Thomas. He was then able to move forward as a pioneer and unleash his own version of Corporate Effectuation into the international market, starting in the Netherlands.

For clients, incorporating the effectuation principles has resulted in exciting effects and changes, inspiring monthly results, and profound transformations in organizational leadership. The De Beukelaar Groep team members have worked together to create a unique collaboration opportunities with clients that don’t require extensive contracts or years of planning.
In the early days, 1998, some team members of the De Beukelaar Groep were teased and ignored by peers and competitors. Eventually, however, they were enjoyed, values, and hired by innovative new clients who believed in their unique combination of business, innovation, and development. Being different took them on quite a journey!
Grow and glow?
Aligning a non-focus approach (within development/organizational effectiveness) with a growing number of partners (16 in 2011) and a warm circle (96 in 2011) of (non-) connected effectuators was a tough ride. New programs, new (types of ) clients and the unbelievable pace of changes created new challenges and mindsets, and in the process, we grew in wisdom, approachability and achieved great changes.
The downsides of this were inimitable speed, nonchalance, and a touch of fatigue. However, working closely with clients and the ever-increasing demand for New World HR people (GSK, Pfi zer, Aegon, ING, Cisco, Rabobank, Vebego, Deloitte, and others) kept the core team motivated and inspired.
Every aspect of the development of the De Beukelaar Groep, with the exception of our wonderful traffic management, which was initiated by Mrs. Mandy Koek and friends, was an accident. The development of our logos, activities, and acquisition of partners/trainees all came together at once as we focused on listening to new markets, partners, and participants.
It was a tough ride, and it’s getting harder every day…but it’s a ride that’s filled with laughter, tears, and 24/7 dedication as we work with courageous clients Thank you for joining us on this breath-taking journey, we look forward to getting to know as we work together to change the world.
The programs we have initiated and the projects we have taken on have taken us to many exotic places, from caves high in the mountains to hotels we’ll hopefully never have to visit again. These journeys have always been with the best faculty and have assisted us in our own personal growth and development as well. As a result, we are very grateful to our clients.
Like our clients, we too also had to reinvent ourselves over the years. Beginning as trainers, we grew into guides. As guides, we have been able to facilitate and coach top leadership teams in creating solutions to challenges faced by organizations that are operating in uncertain and ever-changing markets. As a team, we are not very well suited to engage in repetitive training. We enjoy creating new and individually tailored programs that meet the needs of each organization we work with. As a result of our individually tailored programs, we could never be nearly as efficient as our competitors, who themselves have turned into execution machines. We simply love what we preach that is to search for new opportunities for change. We specialize in guiding teams that feel the urge to grow and reinvent the way they operate and deliver value.

The atmosphere we managed to create within the accelerator is decisive and one that will bring about a real difference. Openness, respect, and trust are the basis in which we function and achieve results. Nonetheless, it will take much more than these traits to achieve the sparkle, creativity, and complete change in principles for groups to transform and create value. Achieving these objectives call for an atmosphere that can be felt, tasted, and smelled as soon as you walk into a startup’s office. It’s an atmosphere that makes you feel good and brings about a desire to trade in your suit for a t-shirt and pair of jeans.
You yearn to dance, the dance of chance!
Such an atmosphere can be created by picking a surprising location; one that differs from what people are used to, and a place that keeps reinventing itself over and over again, such as a refreshingly unorthodox beach premises or a converted factory occupied by designers and other creative minds. The energy of your mentors are the icing on the cake. The atmosphere we should strive to create should suffice to persuade the bank of England to open its doors, so that the boys and girls can come out and play, arriving at the most spectacularly inconceivable creations.
